Does the distributor need a gasket

I have a 1939 Ford V-8 Flathead and wasn't paying attention when I removed the distributor. Does the distributor need a gasket when I re install it.

I sent it out to Bubba's machine shop and they did a fantastic job. It looks like new again.

Thanks in advance!

Yes and dont put any sealer on it,mine come with all gaskets needed including the one you need? ken ct.

No it wasn't a reflection on you,it wasn't ment that way, just telling him i have the gasket if he wants one.I figured maybe he forgot it,ive done same with a couple of carbs in my time [no base gasket] **** happends.Sorry if you took it that way,my appoligies. ken ct. Whens that 39 carb comming and i'll make sure you get a gasket with it.lol/

I'm thinking you are probably talking about the gasket that goes between the back of the distributor and the timing gear cover and are you talking about a stock '39 distributor? If so, the answer would be yes, you should have one there in that location. You should also have a gasket that fits between the plastic inner cap, outer cap and housing, one on each side and a gasket between the coil and the housing. Also make sure you have the two little rubber plugs in place on the bottom of the distributor housing, if you are possibly using an earlier helmet distributor on that '39 engine. The front mount distributors often see a lot of moisture coming through the radiator and sometimes up from under the distributor during a heavy rain. If you have the right gaskets in place, the inside of your distributor will stay relatively dry and keep the spark alive as it should.

There are NO rubber plugs on a 39 distributor contrary to what some people think, they ought to take a look at 1 before giving out wrong info. lol ken ct.

Airrace, you are right on the money about the work done at Bubba's shop. He recently did a crab style distributor for me and it came back looking beautiful. I'm getting ready to send him another one for rebuild and also one off my '35 5W Coupe Avatar car.

Hey ken ct, he didn't really say he had a '39 distributor. Read his post again. He said he has a '39 V-8 Flathead but that does not necessarily mean he also has a '39 distributor  it's never good to assume  maybe you are actually the one who's wrong by making assumptions
