Does modern mean better?

I expect the "original style" points are made by the same people who produce the "modern style" points......

I like original because it is original...I'd really like a set of points that were made in 1929.....but they would just wear out and need replacing...

Look, I've said this a half a million times, properly restored and adjusted original, and original style, Ford parts will give you a reliable vehicle that will handle everything the original car was built to do.

They were designed for driving down creek beds. Big wheels, heavy fly wheel, truck like construction ...

Solid state cutout and electronic voltage regulator come to mind. Perhaps some carb float valves, A&L condensor, etc. Silicone pigtail wire in distributor.
Later style clutch disc and Spicer U joint also.

An excellent original post, Mitch, and likewise excellent and entertaining responses.

Ray i also thought the thread went well with some very good responses. Vince I agree with your MODERN assessment on improvements.

What I was trying to do was hopefully help some of the newer members be aware that MODERN is not always better just because both are listed (modern or original) but can be in certain cases and what some of those things are...

After reading so many new member virgin models A posts with installing MODERN points as part of the process I thought it was appropriate. It seems many newer members rarely post replaced ORIGINAL style points with the same.

dont forget oils and greases. i welcome synthetic super stringy in all temps never hardens grease of today VS some of that stuff that turns to concrete of yesteryear. :D

im sure our modern reproduction wiring has better insulation than the rubbery plastics back then. im also betting some of our modern fancy rubbers will hold up better in things such as gromits and the like. the innertubes in the tires seem to be better many years ago VS modern recycled stuff tho.

The part I never understood about the "modern" points:
If they were going to go to the trouble to make it "better", why the hell didnt they use the Chevrolet points, and make it so you could set the dwell with it running?? THEN, I would have said it was better.:)

Since the vast majority of Fordbarner's were born long after the Model A was out of production, it's difficult to relate to what the driving conditions were in the thirties. With a few rare exceptions, restored Model A's are not up to the driving conditions found in urban areas or freeways. We've all seen the Ford films showing A's driving over plowed fields at walking speed or crossing a small stream. How many of you would take your current A and duplicate those driving conditions today?
I think that there is a "perception" that an A can keep up with current traffic conditions with "modern" parts.

Yep modern oil and greases

Bad question.

You have to ask, For what part.

Modern batteries, yes.
Modern condenser, yes
Modern tire compounds, yes

Modern part causes more profit so we market it, YES.
Points either work fine. Quite frankly the vast majority of used points you find on a used junky distributer will likely give you decades of service. So you can spend $$ for 'modern' which are harder to adjust or just use the easy to maintain original type. Please do not buy the argument, you can get modern points anywhere. Who cares, how often do they fail that bad on the road with out giving many miles of warning?

Alternators, huge profit for someone. A properly rebuilt gen is good for decades and can give you more power (sorry just because it is rated 60 amps does not mean the system can do it).

Modern bulbs you know those big ones. They cause unfocused shining light in the tree tops due to the wrong reflector shapes. Lots of light just not enough where you really need it, pretty sure in the eyes of oncoming traffic is not a good thing. Not a good deal. They are bright and you had to buy alt to install them and you converted to 12v while you are at it. So like $300+ later what do you have for the money?

Modern seals, well leather does better job on worn surfaces. Modern like nice round shafts.

Regulator in the gen. Probably a good thing as eliminates having to learn about watching you charge which many people do not understand.

List goes on.

So is it better, well what are you trying to do and what does the science say.

You have ask a lot of questions. The problem is many do not know which questions are best to ask. You kind of have to understand 1920's engineering and materials.

Newbie opinions:

1) My car came with modern points so I lack the experience of original style... From what I've read, part of the point back in the day to use modern points was to get the condenser away from the engine's heat since the condenser's' over time failed more often due to the heat (or so they thought). Today's condenser's of the original style are more reliable than then past and the need to use modern points (and get the condenser away a bit from the heat) is moot.

2) It seems of those who have tried modern, most will say it's much more easier to adjust the original style gap, than the modern style...

In the end points are just a switch... how long they last is likely up to the manufactures.. and the same goes with condensers..

Silicone pigtail wire in the distributor? Have I missed something here? Please advise.

Henry, figured it out long ago. what is good for the most.
IE: multi disc vs. single disc. old style Vs. new style

Mr. Bell also
rotary phone vs. touch tone vs. what we have now.
progress will happen.
