Do You Remember?

Dual spots, dual aerials, mud flaps, wind deflectors, bug deflectors, full hubcaps, curb finders, rocks in the hubcaps, flashlights on the steering column, wolf whistles, fuzzy dice, model T coils as shockers, headlight visors, suicide knobs, a dollar's worth of gas, curb service, Burma Shave and your girlfriend's neck scarf hanging on the rear view mirror? If you do you are dang near as old as me!

Never heard curb finders. Curb feelers, yes. Neck scarf? How about panties? And you forgot Moon discs, laker pipes, bigs & littles, and rubber bladed fans on the dash. Otherwise, you're an old coot like the rest of us!

For the most part,I guess we're all aging gracefully. There's nothing wrong with getting older, but it seems we have a problem with growing up.At least I do.

I remember my dad driving to the gas station when I was a young kid-- my dad drove a big Buick Electra 225-- where we would run over the bell hose and stop at the pumps, and then two guys would run out to the car and start checking the tires and the oil and everything else while another guy pumped the gas. They had one of those change dispensers hanging off of their belt. Full Service Gas Station.

Tony, that reminds me too! We had a Standard Oil Training center station near us. There would be FIVE trainees attack the car. They all had black bow ties on their white shirts, and white service caps. We soon learned to resist their sales techniques for belts and battery cables!

Can't say i do. i do remember gaudy coloured mudflaps & floor mats and a coffee can pop-riveted to the exhaust, boy that was lame.

I remember 1 vacation trip to Vt. Pop's car started to run like sh**, pulled into the 1st gas station he saw a Philips 66 / now my dad was very mecanical & could match wrench for wrench with the best of them,But the problem was just out side of what he could figure out.
2 of the attendents came over & asked if they could assist, Pop chuckles yea go ahead I for sure can't figure it out.
the 2 attendents made a small huddle ( talked ) together.
Then one went across the street to a car parts store and came back with a Condenser.
Gave it to pop and said try this , with a snide remark he said I just gave the car a complete tune up before this trip. the attendent said try it if it don't work you don't have to pay for it.
So he put it in and the car ran like a top.
O yea I forgot to say the car was a 1952 Ford crestline.
Another thing I forgot to say the attendents were " GIRLS "
Pop was so impressed that " GIRLS " knew there way around a car that after that he would gas up at Phelps 66 stations if given the choise. which in most cases only had
" GIRLS " as attendents.

One more thought what about Chinese fire drills @ the stop lites!!!

Do the Oregon/Washington gas stations still have forced full service? That was the only time I remember in recent history where that still happens.

I wish I could remember most of that stuff, back then people had respect for each other, you could even leave your car unlocked.. And if it was stolen they blamed the person that stole it.. Not like now as you would be blamed for leaving your own car unlocked!

And a Bull Durham sack hanging from one of the switch knobs.

Nowadays you might see some clown with a "sack" hanging from the receiver hitch. For some reason, most of the time it's hanging from a Dodge, or Ram, or whatever Fiat calls their pickups.

Here in Oregon we can't pump our own gas unless you are a commercial card lock customer. When traveling to other states where I have to pump my own gas the price hasn't been any better so I appreciate the service especially when it's sub zero outside. And the Shell station where I buy most of my fuel still washes the windshield unless the weather is way too cold. One Shell station on the outskirts of town has their pump jockeys wear the old white uniforms. Kind of a neat reminder of when I was a kid.

I used to have a 51 ford 2 door hardtop with cable controlled cut outs. Used to drive the cops crazy until they finally figured it out.
