My wife plays a little game when I drag some rusty orphan home. She goes into silent sulk, predecessor to "the look", and God forbid, "the talk." Having bought something I can't afford, I compound the problem by spending an equal/greater amount of money on something she wants. This has gone on so many times I now do a pre-emptive strike. I traded a jonboat for a pretty sweet 39 tudor last year. (Whoo Hoo!!) Knowing what was coming with expenses on the 39, I promptly put in new kitchen countertops, appliances she wanted, fixtures, sink, floors, and carpetting. I effectively built a bank I can draw against. Now there is a treaty of peace in the house. But if she ever sees the bill on my new flathead, I guess someone is going to get a new bathroom next.
