You should have told them "yes" and let them think it over.
Yep, I've also aged quickly. I built a little car and wagon, like Henry's quadricycle, and I'd take it to threshing shows for the kids to drive and ride in. People often asked if they were my kids.
The next year I was being asked if they were my grandkids.
Well when the pretty ladies say that to me ,I reply im not as good as i once was BUT im as good once as ever i was , That makes them think , Then the younger ones ask mister how fast will it go ?? how about 180 kph. ??? that keeps them quiet.
I've been asked, when out on my 1927 Harley, if I was the original owner. I say to them, "Well, if I was, let say, 27 years old in 1927and bought it new , I would be 114 years old now." They just give me that blank stare back.
I too have been asked this question - haven't we all! I once had someone say "Nice car but it's all replica, of course. A car couldn't last THAT long." When I and all the other vintage car owners present assured him they were all original cars restored, the blank look said he couldn't get his head around it.
When I'm asked by a young fellow "How fast does it go?" I answer "I don't know." That is the honest answer because I haven't tried it to the limit but they assume that's what everybody does with their car and can't comprehend that I don't.
Wish I could bottle the looks on their faces!!
The best answer I've given to the question "how fast does it go" and this doesn't matter weather it be on two wheels, four, or has wings, is "Fast enough to scare you"
When they ask how old? My answer is me or the car... I'm always happy to be talked to. Helped promote our hobby and maybe help folks understand how special these care really are and their drivers as well.
