Do battery cables come in 6V and 12V?

In trying to install the battery disconnect switch using the bracket that attaches to the side of the starter, I found that I need a longer cable to connect the positive post to the switch.
Are the cables different for 6V from 12V?
Can I just go to my local auto supply store or do I need to get one from the normal A vendors?
Thanks as usual.

Yes the 6v needs to be larger. There are numerous vendors that can make you a custon battery cable. I'm sure someone will chime in. I am away from my info right now. One that comes to mind is batterycablesusa.com .

Snyder's also carries battery cables.

The ones from the parts store will most likely be for 12V.

I installed a cut-off switch as well as a solenoid, so I needed multiple 00 cables of odd lengths. I think I used a company called batterycable.com. They make any size in any length with any end. Very happy with the products

The go to company in Colorado / WY for years, since the 1960s has been Hensley Cable.

Battery cables are made in different braided wire (copper) diameters and identified by gauge size. They are not made for 12V or 6V. As the gauge numer decreases the diameter of the wire increases. Therefore, a 6 gauge wire is smaller in diameter than a 00 gauge. The general rule for sizing battery cables is bigger is better. Larger diameter cables have a lower resistance to current flow than smaller ones.

Take a magnet with you when looking at battery cables— some of the factory ends are steel and get bad internal connections.

The starter cable was 1 gauge, multi strand, three years old. It corroded and created resistance. The corroded area was covered by the insulation, so could not be diagnosed by visual inspection. Found by meter.

battery cables dont care what voltage , 6 ,12, or 24 volt. its the size of the cable that counts , lower voltage has more restinace, so for 6 volt cars you need bigger cables, there is more restance for lower voltage

I have used BatteryCablesUSA several times for various vehicles when installing cut-off switches.
