trying to order the cap for my 47 ford. but it has the crab style cap on it but in the parts list it says the crab cap is for 1942- 44 models and mine should have the v shaped style..she hasnt run in a couple of years trying to get her on the road again.... form drawing of both groups the distributor its self look the same wondering if someone stuck a diffrent year cap on it befor i got her if thats possible.......thx for any help any of u may have

oh and when she was running sound very good..

As long as the cap and rotor are changed together, as well as hold down clamps, either system will work. Crab cap must be used with crab rotor and V cap with V rotor.

thanks flatjack9 didnt know if it was possible to just change the caps or if they would have changed the whole distributor. now i need to figure out if i want to switch it back to the oringal cap for that year damn lol, also must say the ford barn is a treasure trove of knowlege. only found it about a week ago. and useing the search tool found good advice on every problem i have come across so far. maybe some day ill be able to add some infomation to a question sombody posts. but i doubt ;)

42 to early 46 used crab type cap & longer 21 A 12200 rotor.later 46-48 used 2-piece cap & shorter 59A 12200 rotor.--At least in Canada.

caps, rotors, and clips are the only parts different...
Crab is indeed easier, mostly at the stage of installing the secondary wires. Late distributor (the Squid...) is designed to be more watertight and specifically to keep condensation out of the inside.
Both are extremely easy to work on, as you can swing the distributor out of the car in about a minute (two bolts, wire terminal, flip off rotor and drag it out) and do all repairs including timing off the car and in comfort. But getting those wires into the late one is an interesting wrestling match!

Dave cabral is the guy on Dougherty st. Its a dead end st off NB road on rt going down about oposite the rear of the PO. ken ct. Glad the parts worked out for you this setup is way more simple than the 47-48 caps. ken ct.

I changed the cap, rotor and clips on my 47 to the crab style. It's just easier to get at and work on than the 47 style.
