Thats the high performance ignition cooling scoop modification. It's usually done to eliminate the dreaded muffler bushing replacement.

Actually that's the First model ignition scoop modification the second ignition scoop modification had tho scoops and with the new tool I sell muffler bushings are a cinch to replace.

Just a guess here... I wonder if someone put a later, say 36 engine in a 33 - 34 and didn't change the mounts? That (what was cut on the housing) would be about enough to clear the cross member.
What say you folks?
To this day, I see things done (too often) that make me laugh and sometimes cry. Not necessarily in that order.
Makes me want to yell "put down the wrench and back away from the car".

I say paint some teeth on the opening and a couple of eyes above just to make it look Mean! Guess the owner want see where the magic happens? Was told to let out the evil spirits? Mis-informed on how to access the points? Oh, this list could go on and on...

I think i will smooth off the broken ear ( maing it a two ear and rebuild it adding the teeth like you suggested . Make a great swap meet item . What ya think ultra rare 1936 3/4 model air cooler for supercharged engine ????:D

I'm not sure but if you convert a later (8BA style) engine to front mount dizzy, and use that type, it fouls on the pulley. I used a crab style and had to file the cap. Maybe that was used on an 8BA and instead of a bit of gentle filing, someone went over the top and just hacked a chunk out of it.

Just a wild *** guess from me.

Mart.

It is a sacrificial "donor" unit from which the piece was cut to weld into the place of another unit that had a hole smashed in it.
