Distributor rotor phasing

Yep i get them with the cam in one box and the distributor in the other box etc. Ya know someone has had it apart .
I now know to just take a minute to check them. Next one if get it i will do a post on it and show how we check it and what screw NOT to loosen when working on it......

I made a video showing what it looks like after I put it back!

I for one would sure like a quick briefing on how to check the cam/rotor phasing. I have a YC unit that is in excellent shape and would like to check that feature before firing it up.

Without a distributor machine you can mark the distributor cap contact points on distributor housing with a magic marker etc. This is done with cap installed. Then remove the distributor cap and observe the eight marks on housing. Turn distributor shaft and align the rotor tip with one of these marks. Now turn shaft until both sets of contacts are open, rotor should be in alignment with distributor cap contact. The Mallory rotor tip is pretty wide to allow some variation at higher rpms.........:)

So, a 4 lobe like mine, only one set of points would be open atany given time? Thanks for the feedback, I will check it out.

If it's been run a while look at the contacts and rotor tip, if they are burning all on one edge like off the corner you have a rotor phase problem

That would depend on how they are wired. If wired together you would use the instructions i gave above. If seperate (mag spark dual primary coil) then each set would fire one coil , mark as above and check one set of contacts then the other......;)
