Thanks guys, the new ballast resistor measured 2.8 ohms and didn't make a bit of difference. With the car running I am getting just under 10 volts on the coil. I checked the points with a dwell meter after I gapped them.
I think its a timing issue. I had it on 10%. If I drop it back to 6% it gets worse. Its not very technical, but tonight, I did like I used to years ago and ran the timing up till I got a ping driving it, then dropped it back till the ping went away. The random miss has gone away and it seems to be running much better. I double checked with a light but the markings are not clean and clear. I will clean them up another night and give you an idea of where the timing is now.
don't flame me, it worked =]
