Distributor Automatic Advance Kits

Wanting to optimize my engine's performance and fuel economy I am considering purchasing and installing one of the distributor automatic advance kits. Would like to hear some pros and cons about the subject.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I have the unit from FS Ignitions. I really like it. Plus, now anyone can drive my car without having to worry about them forgetting to pull the spark down.

Pro- better performance, perfect timing at every speed, better power curve
Con- ?? can't think of much. maybe in the summer when it's really hot outside (110*), i have to pull the throttle down a little to keep it running. But that's probably just from vapor lock.

Jordan: How does advancing the throttle overcome vapor lock??
Paul in CT

I can't seem to find the words to describe it accuretly because we're not in person. But it's not necessarily vapor lock. Its gas boiling in the carb, and when at an idle the gas gets even hotter because not as much new fresh gas (cooler gas) is getting to the bowl to keep it cool enough to run. So then the gas boils, and doest allow enough gas to pass threw the carb for the engine to keep running. (if the throttle is down, it passes the gas faster, bringing in cooler gas) And then when accelerating from the stop light, with the gas boiling, you experience a major loss of power and the car acts like it's running on one cylinder. A quick fix for this is to pull the choke out, and this dumps a bunch of cooler gas in the bowl stopping the boiling...atleast long enough to get to a decent speed.

I have one of the Nu-rex gyroscope advance units that was in my roadster. I took it out to make all the cars the same, to avoid confusion. They sell for close to $200. I would sell this one for $100.

Thanks for your responses. I was considering purchasing one of the advance units listed in Mac's. Bratton's or Snyder's catalogs. However, from your comments, I sense that there are different brands and other suppliers. My question now is, are some better than others? Any recommendations? Thanks.

An easy way to get "automatic" advance, is to pick up a "B" distributor. I have the FS Zipper look-a-like distributor. It has the same advance curve as the "B" distributor and I couldn't be happier with my engine's performance. You won't be sorry going to a centrifugal advance distributor.

Your best bang for the buck is to call fs ignitions and buy a distributor from them. They have all kinds of options for auto advance distributors. You can get about 2 different auto advance electronic ignition distributors, or you can talk to them and they can make you an auto advance one with points still in it. Pretty much they can get you what ever you want, and all their stuff is brand new and worth the money.

DIST,FORD MODEL B UNILITE

Part: 4501106
$111.37

I just purchased one of these from Mallory and am in the process of getting things (timing etc) set up. Nice, clean, simple and cheap, the toughest thing, so far, was changing the cam gear position so the distributor was properly oriented. I like it.

I have the Nurex centrifugal advance unit that goes in the valve chamber. It works great except when you want to pull the distributor for some reason, then the whole thing collapses in the valve chamber requiring you to remove the side cover to sort it out. This wouldn't be such a nuisance if I didn't have the oil filter adapter on the same cover.

Is there directions on wiring . Please let us know how it works

Yes, three wires just like the Pertronixs and one ballast resistor. BTW, this is a 12v electronic unit w/14° advance. This is where the timing comes in, I have it set to 10° BTDC to get 24° advance at 2500rpm. The ignition wire was dedicated but I hooked up an electric fuel pump to the 12v side of the ballast w/no ill effects. The set up is becoming prolonged because now the water pump is messing with me and I am looking at leakless pumps. All part of the fun.

Milton. Does your Mallory require a 12 volt system? And also, what does changing the cam gear position require? Difficult? Thanks.

Yes it is a 12v system. Changing the cam gear is simple if it needs to be done. Rotate to TDC, remove distributor and note the location of the slot in the top shaft. Line up the Mallory slot tab and verify the rotor is pointing in the right direction. If not, disconnect the fuel line and move the manifolds out of the way. Remove top of oil return pipe bolt and loosen the bottom and it will rotate out of the way. Remove side cover and, dist shaft and gear hold down spring. Lift the gear and rotate it to align the rotor with #1 plug wire. Put all back together. This isn't really necessary but I don't like plug wires stretching any farther than necessary and this puts the number #1 plug wire close to the #1 plug.

Milton: Mallory Dist. No. 4501106 for $111.37?? Where did you find it? So far my searches have turned up pricing for the same thing at over $500? Thanks.

Milton's photo is a hot link to PrestoLite Performance. Just click on the pic of the distributor.

I've been running a Remund electronic distributor with auto advance. Easy to install, work's great (easier and quicker starting than the stock unit).

Jeez, now he tells me. If your car was half as fast as your mind it would be LSR material for sure. :D Thanks from the old dog that learned a new trick today.
