I'm rebuilding a crab distributor and would like to know what type of oil or grease to use for the moving parts. i was thinking about using engine assembly oil like used on a new cam shaft. What's the norm?

Maybe a little engine oil on the shaft bushings before you assemble it. We didn't have flatheads, but we had 400 vehicles with points. We used a special Delco distributor lube, just where the points ride on the cam. I don't think it's available anymore except surplus on eBay. There were no factory signs that anything else was ever lubricated above the breaker plate. Some of the distributors have a spot to drop a couple drops oil into them to lubricate the bushings. The Delco distrbutor grease was a special thick, maybe silicone base grease, so it would stay on the cam lobes and not be thrown off by the rotation of it. Pretty sure Delco distributor grease doesn't exist anymore but there are some surplus tubes of it on eBay. Standard still makes SL-2 distributor grease and it's probably the same stuff. A little tube of it will last you forever.

On the points cam use any brand high temp disk brake bearing grease. Just a very light smear around the cam. You can use the same on the weights pivot pins etc. Engine oil 30 on the shaft bushes and a smear on the vac brake cylinder. Regards, Kevin.
