Dispelling myths....

Well, some of you asked me, in the past, to inform how my Kiwi QC was going..when my hands healed. Happy to report that 'things' are going well , and that I've completed the quickchange installation in my '30 roadster...tested it out and it runs great:D !
Now for the involved myth: Even on ole threads here, it was said that this installation would result in NOISEY running rear end! This in NOT true! In fact, I was concerned that I'd done something wrong, it is absolutely quiet as a rebuilt rear should be:) !
This is not promoting anything ( just saying because I was asked to report back)....except silence, eh...as it's golden !

Great news. I will have to swing by and check it out. I think i want one. Mark.

Next few days around here is supposed to be in the 80s...I'm definitely going to be exercizing the 'ugly duck' hard! Mabe I'll drop by to see how your latest project is progressing:) !

Looks great! Where can I get One? Ron W

Ron,
Derek/Judy Thomason of New Zealand make two units: model A and V8. Can't promise that Derek will personally deliver a unit(as for some:o) but I know that he's headed back to the USA in March 2012. He can be contacted at:antiqueford@xtra.co.nz
Model A people thru/thru and a Fordbarn member! Good luck and let me know if I can be of help in your quest.

QC noise is caused by the spur gears. Derek uses new gears that are cut differently than the old Halibrand gears, they can be noisy, I know from experience.

What is the point of a quickchange in a model A

jhowes,
Well, I considered an overdrive investment (into the torque tube). Overdrive gives choices for higher vehicle speeds with lower engine speeds AND with gear change...vice/versey. This QC basically does the same thing in a different way. A added benefit with the QC is that there's a large number of easy available gear sets (50?). By using different gear set combinations, you can accomplish any ratio that is practicable/useful to your satisfaction.
Cost difference was not my concern, although the cool factor and gear change factor of the QC...well is left coast,eh

How quick is a Quick Change? Do you have to drain & refill the rear end each time?

Good question. There's (see pic)half dozen bolts and rear plate to remove and about half cup 140 lube to drain/catch/reuse/whatever.
Reverse and/or change gears to accomplish your goal. Reinstall rear plate and lube.
For now, for example, I have the unit in higher(od)mode to experiment. It's so nice a combination, with my R&P and trans setup, that I'm happy running it for now as is. One day, I'll change to lower ratio to see if I got what I wanted there, i.e.- quicker start/more engine rpm. Point is, I'm NOT going to ge changing gears and lube very often anyway.

Most know I consider myself a purist, but that looks really trick, amazing how the back of a model a makes that look so good.....By the way, your work space looks like mine! :)

Always great to have another happy custmer, These units are not a money making venture , The gain for me is meeting so many great folk both here & in person , helping one another out, Now at the next FAST meet Don,s lie & brag, I won,t have to lie & may even be able to Brag a little, even if its upsidedown, What great folk from a great country , just wish the plane flight of 12 hours plus was quicker & less expensive, Thanks too for this site , Derek from another hot day in A heaven.

Steve,
'work space'...like yours, that's funny...and a sore spot ! SHE says that 'things' have to change. I say..what's the problem? You have a 55 year old chest freezer and 30 year old washer/dryer in there (somewhere:o).
Yeah, it is an embarassment. I guess the 'ugly duck' will have to go, what with fishing/camping/hunting/backpacking stuff along with tools/parts,etc...yikes mabe SHE is right:eek:

BTW Steve I'm a wannabe purist..does that count:D !

Quick changes were designed so the racer can get the ideal gear ratio for the track he is running, they varied in length, etc. I run a 3.04:1 for most street use and a 6.40:1 for most hill climbs. The 6.40 allows me to start in 2nd gear and make the easy (quick) shift into 3rd. It takes less than 10 minutes to change gears and refill with oil and often draws a crowd while doing it so you meet new people :-)

Hardtimes looks like Ron did a good job , Will catch him up in few weeks, HOW about you ??
Derek,
Hmm, I thought that the 'Brag/Lie' meeting is for only F.A.S.T. members...no?

Question:
Since there are SO MANY gears manufactured and can be used in this QC (to achieve ratios wanted).....are all gears stamped with ratio/what:confused:
Otherwise, it would be awfully hard to keep track of what's used and what a guy has available,eh....especially when your getting older:)
Gotta start my 'collection' of gears for experimentation !

Tradition: Make a wooden box with partitions so each pair you own has a compartment, oily and smelling like 140...the lid gets a Halibrand ratio chart torn out of an old speed catalog. You can buy a manufatured bow for this, but that just ain't right nohow.

Bruce,
Great idea, thanks! Already using straight 140...so got the smell covered;), and have the ratio chart. Now for the box...
It's nice to have an experienced guy like you to ask for help. Soo,
lots of questions, i.e.- is there any way of telling how much and which way speedo situation is effected by each gear change ..or just ignore that
Mabe Fuzzy math with tooo many variables,eh?
I'm using 16" 600 wheels/tires with 3:54 R&P .
My problem with chart gives ratios for 3.78 ; 4.11 ; 4.33 ; 4.88; 5.13 and for 5.38.
As stated, I have 3.54... what do do?
