Disk Brakes on a 49-53 Ford car

I have already instaled the Disk Brake kit on the front of my 53 and trying to make up my mind if I should stick with the original Master or go to a dual master from a 67- 70 Mustang that is set up for front disk brakes and rear drums. What did you do and did you install a residual valve or a adjustable proportioning valve in the line going back to the rear drums? used the Engineered Components kit. Appreciate your reply.

I also used ECI kit for my 41, ECI told me that I didn't need the proportioning valve with the m/c they supply with it, residual valves yes. Talk to them, good prople.

Run a dual master set up for disc/drum. You will need a residual pressure valve ( 10 lbs) for the rear (drum) brakes. Its hard to believe that the original master will supply enough fluid for the disc brakes - but not sure on this.

I too am in the process of installing disks on the front of my 41 pickup. You will need residual valves, 10 psi for the rear and 2 psi for the front. As far as a master cylinder goes. I have already made the conversion to dual circuit using a Mustang unit. The owner of the speed shop I bought the disk kit from is using a stock M/C in a 47 that has a disk conversion. I recon it boils down to what do you feel comfortable with.

A dual master cylinder is of course a much safer set up than a single. That being said however. I have disc front and drum rear on my 50 ford and am using the original master cylinder. Been running this setup for four years now with no problems. Also using DOT-5 brake fluid. The only modification to the master cylinder is to remove the residual valve from the rear of the cylinder. No proportioning valve or residual needed. This is a JAMCO disc brake conversion kit, no power and stop as good as any of my modern drivers with power brakes.

What is the location of your MC, on firewall or under the floor? I was told that I could use the single master by removing the 10 psi valve in MC amd install a 10 Psi valve in the line going to the rear drum brakes

MC is under the floor in original location. Residual valve in rear of MC removed and thats it. No other modifications made.

i have zero faith in single m/c. if you have ever had one fail you will understand. this safety issue is not worth compromising on, my grandkids will never ride in a vehicle with a single m/c.

If your mc is under the floor. I used both residules and proportioning valve .The first mc didn't work, couldn,t bleed got another 1970 mustang mc with disk brakes. This is on my 39 ford.Granda rotors with drum 8" brakes.
