Discharge reading

When you charged the battery did you put the positive charger clamp
on the battery ground cable? If not the battery is charged backwards.

Well guys, after all of the great responses from all of you, I guess I'll have CROW for breakfast. I finally got my old eyes and flashlight working together and found that the battery is indeed installed backward. It was that way when I bought the car. As for the ammeter registering correctly, it must have been my imagination. I'm going to take the battery out and completely discharge it, and see if it will charge up correctly. If it doesn't, I'll buy a new one.
Many thanks to all of you for the head scratching and comments. Looks like the first person to reply was right on target.

Bagpiper, remember that the A is a positive ground vehicle, not negative, so make sure you take that into consideration when you check battery polarity. Sure sounds to me like the battery may be charged backwards.

gilitos, the positive cable is connected to the negative battery post, and the ground cable is connected to the positive battery post. Sounds like to me that the battery is installed backward. That is the way it was when I bought the car.

If you have a positive ground system, the ground strap should attach to the positive post on the battery. The negative battery post should have a cable attached that terminates at the starter switch.

As others have said, it sure sounds like you hooked up the battery charger backwards.
