Dirty hands

I often use disposable gloves when working on the A.

Of course there are often times when gloves interfere with what I am doing too much and then I get my hands dirty.

I'd love to hear the secret to getting your hands to stop smelling like gas after you get as little as a tiny drop on them.

Another vote for the old "20 mule team" guys. Boraxo is a great product, and is not hard on your skin or your health. Gloves work too, but the thin ones tear and the heavier ones limit your "feel" and dexterity. :)

A mechanic I knew when I was a kid used olive oil to lift the heavier grease from the creases in his hands.

I'm with Tom Wesenberg. I use dish washing detergent. Just squirt a little on your hands, rub it in good and rinse it off.
His question on how to avoid split skin in the wintertime..... Move to Florida. I used to have that problem, but it quit, when I went south.
MIKE :)

Wash your hands with mint toothpaste, an Aluminum "Wonder Bar", and a stiff brush. Also good for getting out the smell from a successful fishing trip.

Last week I was cleaning some parts with some old gas (about $1.00 worth) qt I never use gas to clean parts. But this time it was an exception so I thought I had better use gloves. So I put them on and stuck my hand in the gas and when I pulled them out the gloves had swelled up and just started falling apart. Must have the good gas. Richard

I cannot believe that no one has mentioned "Goop" hand cleaner. It is a waterless hand cleaner. It is the same consistency as "GO-JO" but it smells a lot better and it cleans your hands after working with the dirtiest grease imaginable. I have been using it for 40+ years. There is nothing better in my opinion and it is not the least bit harsh on your hands. Fleet Farm and Harbor Freight have it in this area (Wisconsin). Here is a link to their web site. http://www.goophandcleaner.com/ It is certainly worth trying. I find it hard to believe anyone would use gas or mineral spirits to clean their hands. Just my opinion. Don/WI

That or liquid dish soap also works great. A fingernail or hand brush really gets the grease off when used with laundry soap or liquid dish soap.

Now, what's the majic solution to avoid cracked skin on the thumbs during the winter time?

Tom, I carry a Chap Stick in the winter, not only for chapped lips but works on the cracked skin on the thumbs. If you have it in your pocket it works two ways.

To remove the smell of gas, kerosene, differential oil and other smelly petroleum products. Liberally put hand sanitizer (the clear jell stuff) on both hands, rub for 15 seconds or so. Then while still wet with the jell rinse off with running water, then proceed to wash with the soap product of your choice. I for one think it removes the smelly products better than anything else I have tried.

"Do a poor job washing your hands, go out and grab a beer. Girls like it.. "

you must run with a totally different class of girls than what I'd be interested in......:p

I use CITROL in my parts cleaner instead of using a petrolium product, also safer ,no fire hazard .when my hands get really greasey dirty ,IE ,repacking wheel bearing ect,I just walk over to the parts cleaner ,turn it on amd wash my hands, after that use go jo ,also use go jo when I get grease on my clothing or hat.usually takes the stain out too.

When I was starting to work on cars, my father showed me a trick to keep the dirt off.

BEFORE you start working on the car, rub some dishwashing soap lotion on your hands. After awhile, the lotion dries and you can work O.K.

When you clean up, the water hits the soap in your hand pores and rinses off the dirt.

Chris in WNC: You shouldnt be too picky those days.... :p

Good advise might have been to do all the dirty jobs before grown 30.
Never had cracked hands back than.

I love WD40 for cleaning
Its available in cans of 240ml over here.
Sometimes there is promo with 25% +
German maths seems to be : 240 +25% = 250

My grandfather was an old farmer and one of his favorite sayings was “I love padding out hamburgers, your hands come out so clean” I think he said that just to goad my grandmother.
I too like simple green. When I am finished working, I use it to clean my tools and my hands.

Bag Balm is pretty good for healing up the nicks etc. but it sort of stays greasy. Corn Huskers seems to soak in a little better. I vote for liquid dish soap also unless my wife catches me washing up in the kitchen.
