Difficulty installing transmission

I have the engine out of a '28 Phaeton, ond am wanting to attach the newly-refurbished transmission to the engine before I install both into the car. The problem is that the transmission just won't align sufficiently to fasten the bolts on the clutch housing. We have used the small alignment tool, and from that point of view, it is all lined up. When we bring the transmission along, it goes so far, then no further. What are we missing?

Is it possible you have a 28 multi disc main shaft on a later ******> How about the Pilot bearing? Did you try the bearing on the shaft before you put it in?

Can you tell if the clutch disc splines are started?
Put the ****** in 3rd gear so you can turn the output shaft to get the clutch splines lines up.

Was the clutch aligned correctly when installed on the flywheel? Alignment tool is required to get the correct alignment, other wise the transmission won't install

Try cutting the head off some bolts and use them as a guide to sliding the transmission on. Works for me.

Thanks Ray64, your post got me thinking. I went back and tried the old pilot bearing on the end of the shaft, and lo and behold, it wouldn't fit! The end of the shaft is flared ever so slightly, enough to stop it fitting inside the pilot bearing. Fortunately I have a soare shaft, so have been able to swop them out.
Thanks for all the good advice, as usual.
