differential vent

At the slow speeds that the axles turn a spring retained rubber lip seal can conform to about .010 of shaft oscillation and still seal.

I can not use my car for "pressure" testing, I only have the remains of the original seals on the axles, and i know the driveshaft seal passes trans oil into the diff.

My brothers diff has all new seals, I'll think of a way to test it.

Perhaps a small hole drilled in the torque tube seal near the top will serve as a vent, but be high enough to prevent oil draining into the diff.

one or two of the local club members have vented their differential and claim it leaks less or not at all after tours. here is how did mine. just did it, so will need to make a determination later.

My question is, where their diff's were leaking? If the drip and resulting spot is at the rear under the banjo this wouldn't help in any way. This is because there is never supposed to be a way for lube to get out there at any time, vent or not, and the leak will be there till the seals are replaced. If the leak is at the front of the torque tube, how would you know it is the rear? It could be the transmission. Anything between would indicate a hole in a place it shouldn't be.

Think about it.

I thought your idea had some merit, so I tried it out on a 36 model. I got the tube up as high as I could on the chassis, put a fuel filter onthe end to stop anything getting into the tube, took it for a test run and it pushed a fair amount of oil out of the diff. Admittedly you could put the tube up higher on a Model A but I don't think its a good idea, but it was worth a try.

my personal thought is that the gear lube is getting whipped up, sloshed around, and creating a mist and it is going up the (clear, I assume) tube. I still have not gotten any farther on this, but I think I will crawl under there & use the advice from Tom W and try to build pressrue thru the vent. if I can't blow much air in, I will just have to hunt down that LOW pressure gage I had.

got under the car this morning, hooked a hose up to my vent and BLEW & BLEW into that thing! Nothin'....NaDa... zero. this myth is BUSTED. Now I can put it on the 'bay. hmmmm I wonder what it might bring $
