different flathead starter

I Thought all V8 starters were the same. However I have one that has a case that is 6 inches long with a short (1/4"?) endplate. All the others I have are 5 1/2 " case with thicker endplate. Total length is same for both starters. These are 6 Volt. Where did the 6" long case come from?
Thanks

The starters pre-'49 had the thicker end plate. Beginning in '49 they were changed to the thinner plate. Can't speak for the '48 pickups, though.

so, does the thicker end plate mean less torque as in smaller armature and field windings?

Well maybe this is why I can't install the thrust bracket between the starter & sump bolt. Have I got the wrong starter ?.

i believe they are the same overall length, so the bracket to the oil pan should work. shorter main case, thicker aluminum end at the drive end.

Keith, the starter on your 33 Ford V8 had the thicker aluminium drive end plate which was used up to 1948. Your model was never fitted with that bracket and does not need it as long as it is mounted up tightly to the pan mount with the long starter through bolts. Regards. Kevin.
