diff carrier problem

working on a '31 A pickup
The diff carrier where the inside (spider side} of the right axle rides is scoured as is the axle I guess due to a failed pinion bearing.
I realize that this only turns when stuck or turning a corner or uneven tires but is a mirror finish required?

A mirrored finish is not required but check to make sure these scarred areas don't create a stress riser or a stress crack. The biggest issue with a worn surface there is that it allows the drum/hub to move in & out which creates other issues.

A picture might help at this point.

How far into the housing are the spider gears worn?

While it is not super critical, to much wear can allow too much end play for the axle. End play of the axle come from wear in the spider gears as well as the carrier sides.

How are the areas where the bearing are pressed onto the carrier?
They should not be smooth and shiny as the indicates the bearing has spun on the carrier and you can run out of shims trying to get enough pre-load. The area should appeared to be machined with some machine tool marks. The bearings should need to be pressed or heated into place.

Finding a good used carrier is not very hard or expensive. I would ask around to local guys. Keep in mind a carrier with bearings still pressed on is not as valuable as one where they are off and you can tell they are not spun and wore.
