Did Ford make a 2 door phaeton in '32?

The Jan/Feb 1976 issue of V8 Times had that car on it's cover. A brief note inside states that the owner believes it is one of 15 or so pre-production cars built for executive use. I think that statement is a tall tale and the car was built from a Tudor using a Roadster cowl, dash and the rest of the sheet metal work fabricated. BTW, Kube had a classified ad in there too!

The '36 Phaeton on eBay is a different circumstance - that car has a known history and is not being represented as an authentic car.

I see reputable auctions taking care not to misrepresent what they are selling; Leake has a good reputation you would think they would have someone on their staff who could spot this and either pull the car or make a correct representation of what it is.

After the sale if the new owner finds out it's a made up car and was not described as such the owner would have some legal recourse agreed?

Not an earth shaking matter, but just a curiosity to me.

No stock 32 2 door Phaetons. There was an article in the V/8 and I'm going to guess 20 years ago on two 32 2 door phaetons put together by O.D.Hudson a dentist from Sarasota, Florida. These were perfect and could pass as an original. The bodies were 30 or 31 2 door deluxe phaeton. I haven't seen him or the cars for a number of years. He had two 6 or 8 year old boys and said he was saving the cars for them. If all went as planned the boys should be close to 30 and maybe the cars have surfaced somewhere. G.M.

O.D.'s cars seem to have ended up scattered in the four winds. He had a especially nice '32 phaeton and roadster, both Ford-built, unlike the 2-door decades-later phaeton creations.

David he had a roadster and 2 2 door phaetons. I guess your refering to Huricane Charley?? Even if they got damaged you would think someone has them. I think O.D. moved to Coloroda maybe some one knows him and can find out. G.M.

There was what appeared to be a '32 two door phaeton in one of the Mickey Rooney cereals from MGM where an obviously abused car was shown in a process shot.

If you mean the film where he was in one that rolled over on its side, it had four doors. A still photo of it was published in Loren Sorensen's "Ford Life" magazine.

That could easily be where I saw it as I have "Ford Life", Not a large stack to search. Thanks: Fred A

I have a 31 2 door deluxe phaeton I've owned for over 30 years. It has a 4 cylinder 32 engine with over head valves, mallory ignition, cam, down draft Stromberg, 36 water pump and Columbia rear. I drove it on a lot of tours years ago. The 2 door phaeton is the most comfortable modle A far as room for driver and passenger. G.M.

I had a 31 Deluxe Phaeton as a daily driver in HS. Didn't really realize it was a special body style. It was black. Bought it for $65.00 drove it for about 6-8 months and sold it for $125. Model A's were very plentiful then and at reasonable prices; early '50's.

You're from Upper Darby right? I had that car in Gladwyne.

At the time I thought the seat was uncomfortable but maybe there was something wrong with that particular one.

My dream 180 Deluxe Phaeton would be poppy red with black fenders and Tacoma cream wheels, a luggage rack and a canvas covered trunk. Like a baby Packard or Duesenberg.

Another possible source of confusion is a Model A 2-door phaeton with '32 grill in a 1940's movie. My dim memory is that the movie involved Hawaii, WWII, and Clark Gable...?

Henry I acually lived in Drexel Hill. I don't remember seeing your black phaeton But I had a red one eactly like you described and it was a cocky rich looking thing. I sold it about 12 years ago. I also had a Washington blue one that a friend of mine wanted to buy 15 years ago and I sold it to him and he still drives it on a lot of National tours. G.M.

I was in Tulsa during the Leake Auction, and a friend in the V-8 Dallas Region with me was interested in buying this 2 dr. Phaeton. I had my friend, Andy Stone, from Leak Auctions dig into whether it was authentic or not, but he was unable to come up with anything definitive. I can tell you that there were numerous '31-'32 Model As present for comparison, and the body beltline mold on the As is much narrower than it was on the '32. About a 1/4" narrower. The '32 moulding was a bit over an inch wide, where all of the As were about 3/4" max, and even narrower on the hood. It wasn't even close. The cowl had the '32 style vent in the top as well. This car looked to be the real deal, with correct motor, dash, etc. If it was fabricated, someone did the entire body, not just the grill shell of a '32. If it was made from a sedan, there was no evidence of that at all, and all top parts were correct as well.

When I was making steel Model A 2 door phaetons in the 70's we made two 1932 look a like's on 1932 chassis and we altered the cowl to take the 32 windshield assembly, we used v-8 wheels etc. We made several 32' look a likes with the 31 roadster bodies we were making. We never suggested they were 32's and any one quite familiar with these models can see the difference. We made two different 1934 tudor phaetons, a 34 convertible 2 door sedan on and on. None of these were implied to be original. I am sure there are several one off's we don't know about and all of them a credit to the imagination and ability of the builder Don Babb

It,s amazing what comes up here.I was working at M.G.M. way back when and they borrowed a good 1930 4 door touring from me to stage a wreck secne, the car was in pieces.I knew they didn't have a 30 touring but they could rent one from various rental places.I wouldn't put it past the studio to use the 30 foredoor touring in a wreck scene for the tudor phaeton but I have never researched it. Gene Autry made a movie at M.G.M. in 1942 and used the studios 1930 tudor phaeton , in the movie it had a 1932 radiator shell. I suspect the first tme a 1932 radiator shell was used on a model A was two days after the introduction of the new 1932 Ford Don Babb

According to the Leake results webpage, it looks like it did not sell at $57,500.

Unless Leake has a disclaimer of some sort protecting them from lawsuits brought by buyers who bought a 'tribute', 'recreation' dare I say 'fake' vehicle. I believe they are on shaky ground selling a 32 Ford that never existed. Not, mind you a real '32 made up from '32 parts or restored from a rusty hulk, but AFAIK and there seems to be general agreement, Ford NEVER made or sold a 32 2 Door Phaeton.

I mean, we on the FB know the difference, but some buyer who is new to vintage Fords might be mislead. I know it's not my business, but is still bothers me a little.

Just my 2c worth.
