Deluxe roadster taillights?

The '31 Deluxe roadster I recently bought only has one taillight (drivers side), is this correct? Was the right side taillight always an option?
I searched for an answer without any luck.
I will likely add a light on the right side for safety's sake, but would like to know the full story also.

Thanks, Mel :)

Mel,
I asked this same question years ago and then checked on just when Ford started putting TWO tail lights on his cars. I was surprised at that two tail lights were not put on Ford cars for many years after the Model A.
To answer you '31 roadster Q...only one tail light on all model As...on the left rear fender. Of course you can add on on the right for safety. I anguished for a long time...when contemplating cutting into my ford steel to add that light. Safety concerns won out:)

Just to add a little clarity, all cars had a rear lamp on the DRIVERS side. This was common throughout the industry although there must have been some exceptions. In 1931 if you were to spend 13-15k on an American built (Springfield) Rolls Royce it was left hand drive and had a rear lamp on the left side only.

With that said, Ford did see a sales opportunity in LATE 1931 for a few extra pennies and suggested the dealers offer another LEFT SIDE lamp and bracket assembly to mount on the right side.

Thanks for the good info. I like the part about Ford offering left hand lights to use on the right side!

Mel ;)
