Re: bum buyer

99% of ALL Model A guys are honest guys. Plain and simple. I am sure it is in the mail.....

I believe this goes for all "true" car guys. At Turlock this year I saw at least 3 examples of dropped wallets and phones. Someone quickly picked them up every time and tapped the guy on the shoulder to return it. I was at one vendor and he had left a $20 sitting on his table by mistake. I picked up the money and asked him if he would take $10 for it!!!!:D:D:D We both got a good laugh!!

Re: bum buyer

Joe K, very thorough explanation.
The fee is 2.9% for item purchase but money transfer is free of charge. If you do a money transfer you do relinquish some of your protection from PayPal. But sellers (and buyers) are rated on their performance so you are able to see if they have a good track record, much like eBay. That's not a surprise since they own PayPal.
It's very fast so you can have a part move the same or next day.

Re: bum buyer

Paypal does protect the buyer, but definitely not the seller-the commission is 4% overseas and 3% stateside.
Furthermore Joe, if you designate "gift" you just lost your "protection". Paypal does not insure a transaction in which they do not make a profit. read the fine print.....................

Re: bum buyer

Ronn, how is the seller not protected?
You get the payment directly and transfer it to your bank account or whatever.
To have a PayPal account, you must back it up with a valid credit card or a second line of credit. If you have bad credit, they will ban you quickly.

You sound as one who as had a less than satisfactory experience with Paypal? If so I sympathize. And take note.

Paypal is a totally owned subsidiary of Ebay. Made basically to improve ease of trading on Ebay, and favors the buyer. More buyers means more competition for items on Ebay which in turn raises their return.

Never have been a seller through either Ebay or using Paypal. Before that happens I'll DEFINITELY see who has hooks in me.

Re: bum buyer

Hay Guys I use PayPal both ways, it's the best way to go the transfer is instantaneous. Yes they charge a fee but it's worth it. No waiting on either side and your money is safe. JMHO

Re: bum buyer

O.K. then. Thanks Joe, now I will do that from now on. I did not lose that much so I am not out much. It is just the principle of the thing.

Re: bum buyer

I could get into this pretty deep but wont....

reading the fine print, paypal does not cover cash transfers that are free between family and friends, with insurance........... read up before you assume you are always covered under paypal or ebay.
While they both cover buyers well, sellers can get screwed and yes, it has happened to me.
Furthermore, paypal and ebay are splitting company, so dont expect this platform to remain the same. Icahn is reason for the split up and Donahue is resigning.
I s paypal good? most of the time I would say yes, but there are many caveats..............
the insurance provided is not from ebay or paypal, but by an outside insurance co they hire.
so you are at the mercy of that company and yes, they have a list that must fit to the T, or they wont cover you.
CT, if dealing with a fraudulent buyer, as a seller you can lose your $ real quick and paypal and
ebay will lock your $ down and you are out.
Google paypal and ebay horror stories and you will become well versed.....................
Many ebay sellers have left, because of the bs present.

Re: bum buyer

I use Paypal as JoeK #20, does. I just had a illegal try....My wife and I have some furniture for sail on Craigslist and Ebay. Someone sent me a "l'll buy" They, he or she said, I'm at work and our phone satellite system is out of order...blu blu. I want both pieces of the furniture. I'm not going to offer a different price I will pay for it, even at your asking price. They (the scams) used Paypal as an leverage. I can't transfer my money from my Paypal account until my shipper has his cost paid. All you (me) have to do is send them their shipping cost - $800.00 dollars. I then can submit my transaction (fake....) number to Paypal and that will allow me prove my purchase to Paypal. Then I can quickly transfer the money balance, plus the shipping cost to your Paypal accout.

Re: bum buyer

That's a pretty common Scam Dave .
The Seller Should Never pay the Shipping charge !!!

The shipping charge is the buyers responsibility!!! All they are interested in is you sending your money then they will be Gone like a Cool Breeze!!!!

Every Time I put a want add out for a part ;People contact me saying they have the ITEM I am looking for they never mention what it is , or what condition or anything else That's another warning sign!!! of a scam

Be Careful It's a Jungle out There!!!!

Re: bum buyer

Some quite good low cost escrow services around, but the value may be too low on some of these transactions I guess? I'm in the UK and buy off the forum, most recently a few weeks ago. I always pay first via PayPal, which is not perfect but more traceable than a money order, I also try and research across the forums. In the end its sadly still caveat emptor :(

Re: bum buyer

If the buyer sends his money first, he's trusting the seller. If the seller sends the merchandise first, he's trusting the buyer. For commerce to work, someone has to trust someone!
I have to agree with this post found a vendor at Hershey who had Jaxon wheel lugs that I needed for my other car sent me lugs for my OK and was asked to send MO to cover cost and shipping he trusted me not to stick him as soon as I got them MO was in the mail

Re: bum buyer

The trust thing is multi-dimensional.

People are more willing to be trusting if they have a common interest. In the case of the Model A, we all have a common interest in the car. Sellers have a common interest with buyers in moving stock and concluding the deal. Buyers have a common interest with sellers in getting the part they need and concluding the deal.

In the case of the Jaxon wheel lugs, your seller had you hooked and the sale wrapped up - providing you didn't stiff him. Otherwise you might have found EXACTLY the lugs you needed right around the corner, possibly at a better price.

Sometimes making money means taking a chance.

Sometimes completing a car means taking a chance.

And the common interest thing means relying on something other than simply proof of payment.

We all size each other up continually. It's a lot easier in person.

Are you dressed the part? Good clothes for a professional - shop duds for a shop dude?
Are you presentable - no matter your duds are you dressed like you had care of what others might think of you?
Do you have other things you bought in your hands? Certainly proof of having concluded a deal to at least SOMEONE ELSE's satisfaction.
Are you driven for perfection? Generally people who know and are aware of the "details" are driven people - and honesty is just another name for a type of perfection.
Cash is king, of course.

Re: bum buyer

Update. I just received the MO that was sent on the 21st of January. I would like to formally apologize to Pete in my handling of this episode. I should have tried harder with the communications instead of jumping the gun and assuming that it never got sent. For this I am sorry.

Pete Rudanovich is an A-1 buyer in my book and should be accorded that treatment. If it is possible for Ryan to delete this posting I would like it deleted so that nobody thinks ill of Pete in the future.

Thank you,

Mike

Re: bum buyer

Don't be so sure about paypal 100%. Everything is OK if both parties are satisfied. The buyer can change there mind and then claim "not as described" you get to return the money. If paypal sends you money from a buyer and then can't collect from the buyer, guess who is out the money? Not paypal. Seller beware! Paypal is pretty good but not perfect. I wouldn't buy or sell an item overseas without it.

Re: bum buyer

If I sell a part overseas and get money sent to my paypal account, who pays the paypal fees. Say I am sent $100, does paypal take part of that or did the sender actually have to send more than $100? Thanks

You have to have this arranged with your buyer (have him check the "gift" box) or have it built into the price. Paypal deducts appropriately as the money moves in.

I've done this with Barnstuf (Rich Bell) MANY times now. First I paid the price with his extra for Paypal charge thinking that was somehow "right." The next time I bought from him I simply checked "gift/Money transfer" and he got the same money. But as some have pointed out, not as much guarantee.

But I have done business with Rich on and off for nearly 35 years. Perhaps I've earned a right now to use "gift?"

Maybe Rich will see this and reply too.

Seller pays. No charge if the buyer has a paypal balance. Can't remember if there is a charge for bank balance. In my experience, very few buyers have a paypal balance and use a credit card. Charge is then 3%. Haven't sold much since the "great continuing recession."
