decoding truck seriel number

Yeah, but they don't tell much. Series, engine, year and serial number.

Try to find a cowl stamping as well - that tells you more.

Serial:
F5 (1 1/2 ton)
R - 239 flathead V8
1 - 1951
CH - Chicago assembly plant
19721 - serial string

Cowl
CH - Chicago assembly plant
5 - color (Sheridan Blue)
S - ?
3D - assembly date (April 3)
265 - car down the line

I'll give that S some more thot, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment.

Many thanks for the info mtflat, this truck was an Army truck, painted olive drab, will scrape firewall to see if blue paint is underneath, truck is equiped with a giant pintle hook on the rear and two big frame/bumper mounted hooks in front. could S be special-ie military? if the 5 is actually an 8 could that be od green?

I think you're on to something with the color - normally S or SS is special paint and military would fit there. I doubt it would have been an 8 for OD.

I wonder if it says CH SS 3D 265? Since they were hand stamped the spacing is usually uneven.....

I do best on 48-50 trucks but even 51,52 used many of the same codes. In fact Ford made running changes in most years and codes varied from plant to plant.

Back in '67 Ford destroyed most of the old records and we've been trying to put the jigsaw puzzle together for the past 15 years.....
