Afternoon folks. Just bought a 2x4 intake, ECG 9424, "date code , 5 17, can anyone help me identify engine and year that this manifold came from? I intend to use it on a Merc 292 from 56. Goin in my 55CV. Tried to do a thread search, evidently I'm not very tech savy. Plz HELP!! Thanks

You can look at this link but it seems there should(?) be a letter in the middle of the date code.
https://www.google.com/search?q=y+b...&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#q=ford+y+block++date+codes

IIRC the dual 4-bbl teapot manifolds were an option for '57 Thunderbird, Police Interceptor and Thunderbird Special 312 engines... and starting in late '56 as a special order / dealer installed item and over-the-counter from a Ford dealer parts department.

Edit: 1957 312 http://www.y-block.info/casting/intake.html

Definatly the 1957 312 Ford and T-Bird (also Merc. but never saw one) factory installed dual 4 barrel manifold (E code). You say it's going on a '56 Merc. 292. 312 was the only engine available on '56 Mercs.

If the Merc engine still has it's original heads, there will be a slight mis-match, since in 1957 they made the ports slightly larger. Should be able to easily taper the beginning of the head ports to match the intake, or use as is.

There was also an over the counter kit for Mercury and Ford 312's in 1956, came with cyl. heads and a lot more. Total different intake and carbs than the 1957 set up.

Oldmics on Ford Barn is the resident expert on the '56 stuff, so I won't try to talk about it since I don't want to spread any false facts.

Thanks dmsfrr n you too sal, I misspoke. The 292 is out of a 55 Merc. Ill be lookin fer a set of 312 heads ta have reworked forthis engine. Gonna save my nickels n dimes n get all my internals from John mummert. I'm a novice at this so I might be talkin out my a--. When the time comes, you know ill be lookin fer ALL th help I kin get. I think Mr. Mummert will be able to answer most o my questions when I contact him for th parts I will need. I'd like ta get tween 325-375 hp when I'm finished. I retire in 3 yrs n I will spend em puttin this car together. It will be my daily driver when finished. Lookin forward ta doin a burn out every day till I die!!

Sal,s right on the money about the 292 heads being a mismatch for that May 17 casting date on that Y block dual quad manifold.

Theres no way to tell what engine that manifold would have come off of. Originally and from the factory it would have only been installed on a 312 "E" code engine.

An over the counter parts sale could have placed it on almost anything "Y" block.

I just did finally see an original 57 Mercury dual quad, Y block setup from the factory.

In 1957 Merc did not use any data plate identification regarding engine size (they offered both a 312 and a 368) or any of there installed engine options. So the 57 Merc ,312 factory installed dual quads are out there,(so are the M 335s)

Would be cool to find the M 260 option, dual quad correct manifold for that 56 Merc. I'm pretty sure I still have one around here!

So, have I been premature in this purchase? I was under the impression that most if not all Y block (272,292,312), heads, intakes, exhaust manifolds were basically interchangeable. The internals I know need to be modified to swap them out. Jeez, I hope I haven't wasted my $s.

Most 1955 and newer heads and intakes are interchangeable. If you'll look on the bottom of the dual quad intake, you'll find the casting number which will help identify exactly which manifold you have. Based on the date code you posted, you have the ECG-D manifold.

Speaking of 'under the manifold'.....
The original valley pans under the dual quad E-code intake manifolds have a lowered center, to clear the bottom of the manifold. (and they're very pricey, if you can find one)

Hummm..... looks I have a LOT of home work ta do. Good thing I have plenty o time. Lots n lots o questions, what aftermarket (if any) carbs will fit this intake? I'd like ta put Holly's on it jus for the nostalgia. I'd go on n on with th questions but since the engine hasn't been delivered yet n I haven't yet received th intake ill reserve till I can get #s off th block n heads n all th #s off the intake. Then watch out fellas, I'm gonna have more questions than a lil boy wantin ta know where baby's come from. Thanks for all th help n info so far. You guys are great!! Can't wait ta learn......Rowen

Do you have any photos of the 2x4 ECG manifold you bought?
IIRC they were made for the older 'teapot' style Holley carburetors. They have a different / smaller bolt pattern than the newer Holley's and such. Your '55 CV probably has the 'teapot' style carb on it.

Here are 2 photos showing the bolt pattern difference (on single 4bbl manifolds).
Adapters to put the newer carbs onto the smaller bolt pattern are available but I don't know if they'll fit side-by-side on a dual quad manifold, possibly not. There may be other carbs that can fit in place of the teapot style ones but I'm not familiar with them at all.
Someone who's been down that road before can answer those questions better than I, TedEaton, Oldmics and scicala come to mind.

I will have to say it again!! All th help and info, you guys are GREAT!! I purchased th manifold here on th barn. Still posted under for sale, late V8, "nice original ..." I am considering buying a set of aluminum heads from John Mummert. As soon as I receive th manifold, (jus sent th MO Thursday) I will be able to get more #s. believe it is off a 57 E code bird. I understand I will need a valley pan off of same. As I said I'm lookin ta get 325-350 hp out out of th engine. I also will not take possession of th engine till mid July as th fellow has takin Vacation back east. (Yes I trust him). Once I get it I will take all #s off th block n heads n then contact John and/or Tim McMasters for help with th correct parts for what I'm lookin for. Dmsfrr, I looked at the links you sent and it is excellent info, (though being th novice that I am, not quite sure what to make of it) I am a lil premature on gathering th info I know but I'm jus tryin ta get at least a finger tight grip on how ta go about fulfilling my goal. Thanks again, Rowen

My apologies, it was Ted that sent the links. So, thanks to you Ted. Doesn't change my appreciation to you dmsfrr..Rowen
