dashpot

Hello!
The snow is gone and spring's first tour has been completed and it was great. After some restoration remains a problem, the idle would not be smooth. I understand that it is the dashpot that keeps idling rough. I then removed the dashpot and it worked better. So my question is if this is the right part, it is 2 inches long overall. I have it set up according to Ford's manual. Some dashpots I've seen online has a spring around the rubber can it help? Or could it be a problem to drive without dashpot. I gratefully accept tips if anyone know any dashpot in good quality that may work.

Regards Håkan

All the dashpot is used for is to slow the throttle from slamming shut too quick and causing a stall during a fast or panic stop on cars with automatic transmissions only. If it is adjusted correctly, it will not cause a different idle speed or rough/erratic idle. If it gives you issues and can't figure it out, just remove it. There is a separate speed screw on the carb to adjust idle speed. If it runs rough, you need to adjust the idle mixture screws on the carb to smooth out, using a vacuum gage for the highest vacuum, or by ear and feel for a smooth idle.
The dashpot pictured does look like the correct style for an early 50's to late 50's Ford product 4 bbl. or 2 bbl., but not the old 3 bolt 2 bbls used thru 1956.

Actually that dashpot is identical to the one on my '55 with the original 2bbl, 3-bolt carb and it is the exact same part they used for the later 4-bolt carbs. It is also same part for 6 cyl engines with Ford-o-matic.
Hakan, I suggest testing the dashpot by slowly depressing the button and then realeasing the button. If the button slowly returns back to it's original position without sticking, it is a good part. DO NOT lubricate it with anything, not even a little drop of silicone. If the unit sticks, you need to replace it with a new one.
The dashpot should not affect how the engine runs. It is only an anti-stall device. I suggest looking at your carb linkage for looseness or mis-alignment, particularly at the point where the idle speed screw contacts with the stop cam. Check your idle/fuel mixture adjusments at the back of the carb using a vacuum guage. Could be a lot of other things that could cause rough idle. Have you checked your point gap lately?

Hi!
I made the fault to lubricate the dashpot. You are never too old to learn something new. :)
Thank you for your help.
