Dash Rail Screws - Painted?

165-d_body_sm.jpg

That is a good question! It actually seems to be a mix. The pic above is an early-mid '30 (pre-Deluxe) and clearly shows painted screws. However I have pics of "finished" cars that clearly show plated screws. See the photo in the Service Bulletins on page 444. The original photo is negative #7299 dated 3/13/30. The original photo clearly shows plated screws.

Keep in mind that when they went to the new instrument panel in late June 1930 the center screw held the dash light in place. The dash light was NOT mounted when the body was painted so the center screw would have to be removed after paint if it was in place already.

Excellent feedback and photos. Much appreciated.

I recall when painting, I insisted that the dash rail and lower stanchion screws be painted, but for the life of me, I cannot locate the source which led me to that decision.

Great point regarding the center screw holding the dash light. Seems unlikely that they would remove a painted screw on the line, which would necessitate touch-up.

Wonder how this would be viewed by judging?

My search for addtional photos/info continues, so I can sleep at night.

Marcos, interesting production photo. I had always thought Briggs & Murray bodies arrived at factory 'finished' but this Briggs Fordor appears not to have interior installed?. Certainly does not have roof topping installed.
Tomnz.

Actually, I didn't realize until recent years that Murray and Briggs entirely built up any models which of course has to include paint. That is one of the reasons all Town Cars (140-A) have black door jambs, firewalls, etc. It also makes sense for those models that are more difficult to trim out such as Cabriolets. We (I) still don't know just what models were done all or in part before delivery to Ford.
