D Day, June 6, 1944

It's been well covered here on lots of channels, a great programme showing the build up to DDay and the building of the Mulberry harbours.etc.

My dad went over on DDay plus 1, at 18 years old......he never liked to talk about the War much....he was in the column that liberated Belson, that made a lasting impression on him.

A friend of mine, Rich Bell, a Model A enthusiast and parts supplier, and former EV8 parts supplier, now 88 years old, landed on the beach in France, was wounded twice, and awarded 2 purple hearts. We never forget D Day, the 6th of June, and sacrifices those men made for our freedom.

The WWII veterans are dieing at the rate of 800 - 1,000 a day. It won't be long before they are all gone.
I salute them !
MIKE :)

Well my father didn't hit the beach until a week later--June 14 to be exact. He said it was still pretty hot. While he was dodging Nazi bullets and wading ashore, his son (me) was being born in a Chicago hospital.

My father-in-law served over 4 years in the Army in the Pacific, just died a year ago at 96.
My dad served in the Navy in the Pacific, was at Iwo Jima.

A few months ago, I found a post card that he and my mom had written from the top of the empire state building while he was on leave. The date? June 6, 1944!

Fantastic keepsake.

My father was a machine gunner in the 42nd rainbow division, one of the few that came home, they were not on the beach but arrived later. I will not forget how all our service men and women have given their time or their lives for our freedom.
