Cylinder Block Cleaning

I need to get my 1925 block prepared for re-babbiting and rebuild. Is it safe to have the block baked and blasted or is that too harsh on the casting?

Thanks, Racemo

Hello Racemo: That's the best way to clean the block rather than washing it.
Bake/blasting the block will remove all of the sediment in the water jacket area as well as all of the sludge and oil left on the block. Also the other unseen benefit is "stress relief" as the shot blasting or peening relives the block. When you go to magnaflux the block the cracks if any will be more obvious. Don't forget to remove the 3 core plugs.

Even with all the cleaning, do take the time to clean out all the little water passages that connect with the head. I used to have a little teeny wire brush like a gun cleaning brush and I was always amazed at the amount of crud that I could drag out of there even after the block had been cleaned. Same goes for the head.
