Cutting Out When Warm

Sorry, thought you did. Check the flow through the entire fuel delivery system as described above.

There was some discussion of an "in-line" fuel filter. They are a common cause of "vapor lock" which results in stalling/surging after warm up. A good test is to temporarily wrap the fuel line and filter with a wet rag to see if performance improves.

We took the 'Pencil Filter' out yesterday. I certainly hope that's the last time we'll have to drain the tank. I don't know if this will really fix things, but the car ran good and didn't give us troubles before we put that in. Most everyone has had good luck with them and I could only find one person not in favor of them. The car is completely stock with the exception of the battery cut-off that the previous owner put in. I'd sure like to get this to the Amanas this Saturday!

I'm not completely ruling out any other possibilities, though. It seems like for the last couple years this car has had a 'backfire' through the exhaust when letting up on the accelerator.

How did it look? All plugged up? Or?

The filter was clean. Not plugged up. We ran some gas through the sediment bowl without the filter and got some particles out, but not much. I just don't know. Others have had good luck with the 'pencil Filters'. Is it possible it's too many filters?

Good Morning...If you have a glass bowl fuel filter...you might consider putting a good strong magnet in it...makes a good fuel filter and you can SEE when the filter glass bowl needs to be removed and cleaned out...Ernie in Arizona

Check the fuel flow through the whole system. See post #19. Ditch any modern filters that you have in the line.

“Is it possible to have too many filters “ yes !!! A good carburetor inlet filter and one other should be fine. Your removed pencil filter was clean that’s good ! The glass bowl sediment filter at the firewall with out a paper filter and without the brass filter will catch any rust ( used as a drop leg filter) and a good sealing carburetor inlet filter will be fine ! Powder rust should go through your original Zenith and cause no issues . IMO

Fixed it! I hope, anyway. I took it for a little drive yesterday and it didn't act up. It does run a little rough at idle, but I think that's because I don't always adjust the GAV like I should and I'm sure the plugs might be a little fouled. So, maybe too many filters was the issue......

Good for you and your persistence. It's only a Model A fuel system, so how long could that possibly take to fix?

So, was the issue the pencil filter?

It's what I'm thinking. It had been running fine till we installed that last August. (I've been dealing some depression or something - that's why it has taken awhile) It doesn't explain why no one else has had issues with these filters, though. Perhaps my car has some other unseen issues that were aggravated by this filter? I only ever saw one other person (on Facebook) comment that they didn't believe in these filters. With the removal of the filter I do feel confident that it's going to be ok, but we might not get to the Amanas this weekend.

Hey Can Man, Glad you got it running. Do you still have the modern filter in the line? Did you check the whole system as outlined in Post #19.

I never did have a modern filter in the system. It only ever had the carb filter, sediment bowl filter and the 'Pencil Filter' that we installed last August, and now have taken out. Yes, the flow checked out fine.
