cutout/diode

Question on Diodes. I have a repop cutout on my car that works as long as there is no cover on it. For some reason if the cover is on then the horn starts to smoke so we just leave it off. Since I don't really trust the repop cutouts built nowadays I thought that I would convert to solid state and put in a diode.

My cutout does not match any of the pictures in the instructions they provide for conversion. Are they fairly easy to convert or do I need to buy a new one and then convert that one? Or should I just buy a new converted one? I saw something here awhile back about a regulator in a cut out body, any luck with these?

FWIW: Sounds like you're grounding something when you put the cover on (duh). I put a solid state cutout (one piece from Snyder's) on my coupe several years ago after the points kept sticking on the old unit. So far all is well - but I keep a spare with points in the trunk just in case. If the electronic one goes bad, there's no way to service it.

I have converted original cutouts using the Diode, the reproductions are not made the same inside as the originals, that is why the drawing doesn't look like yours. I haven't tried it but I figure that you can add a piece of metal by brazing it or wire welding it inside so the diode has something to mount to in the reproduction type. Your cover is grounding out, it needs the fiber washers in place to prevent this.
