Custom console

My console doesn't really match my interior so I'm thinking about building a new one. Has anyone ever built a custom flow through and if so what material did you build it out of? I know the cardboard cutout to get the shape, wood or thin metal or plastic. Thanks

depending on your skills wood is the easiest just cover it with material to match interior if your skills are above average metal painted to match or if your really skilled brushed finished its up to your imagination

One of my friends did pretty nice work in metal, mostly by cutting and welding. He slit thin wall pipe in half for radius, as he didn't have an English wheel or power hammer. He was a hell of a welder, though.

I used to do some woodworking, and I built a couple consoles. Medium density particle board is cheap and sands easily (well, with a D/A or belt). Glues well. You can do round overs with a router, but it dull bits quickly. The odd cardboard template helps get it the same side to side. The upholstery hides a lot of minor stuff.

OK, now back to the old foggy memories. I'd say 1/2" nominal. Depends on how much round over you do on the edges. It'd be possible to laminate the 90 degree from underneath, but that gets much more involved. After the basic shape is glued up, it'll get stronger, so you might go thinner. Might think about the upholstery and padding before you decide the edge details.

Send a pm if you want more info, I don't want to stray much farther on this site.
