Curtis #14 key cutter

It amazes me how good this works. The mysteries of the locksmith now a little less for me. Anyone need a key?

Looks like a nice key cutter. All you need now is a key, BS cutter carriage and the codes from A201 to A1550 (I think that's right for the Model A codes). If you don't have one - look for a Curtis Code Book. I know the 19th edition has the instructions for use of your Curtis Model 14 key cutter and the right A codes. Have fun, Bill

Great,.....I have a "Model E",..with what I think are the parts. Is this key cutter
complete? Do you need some paper with the codes too the parts?

The big question is,.........how does it work?

You have to have the correct blank and carriage. You put the blank in the carriage, BS carriage and B1 blank for Model A, and H carriage and H5 blank for 32-36

and then the carriage in the cutter. Picture shows #3 position. #1 position is pushed all the way in

Move carriage out to #2 position and repeat.

book for Model A.
You need key number from lock to look up in book which number to punch(key code number)

or use a key gauge

There are 5 codes for each key for example 55123
Switch lever to proper spot on circle or in your case spindle
BS for Model A and select the correct number, squeeze the handle and repeat 4 times

Cool, I had to pay $20 for the H (32-36 v8) carriage.

Thank you!
Don't quite understand the "#1" in the codes,..I have no #1 on the
"carriage".

Duh,...the "#1" in the codes is the depth of the cut, is that correct?

This is a great tool for destroying a perfect key blank in the hands
of an amateur .

Dudley

btw,...the key cutter I have was dug out of the trash,...I just don't know how
complete it is.

Code 1 is the depth of the cut yes and it is the same as no notch. No #1 on the carriage. Number one is the carriage all the way in. Move to left and #2 shows up. I did ruin a couple cheap key blanks when I wasn't watching what I was doing.

Yours is complete for Fords with lots of carriages if you have the spindles for BS Model A and H early v8. Your cutter has spindles instead of discs. Most of the carriages are not for Fords so...

This is what I have as far as carriages and posts. I have no "H" markings on the posts for the carriages,...must use "BS" or "BSD" with the "H" ?

Kinda interesting on the 2 posts @ the "BSD" location, the notches are very close, but not exactly the same...

Also, on the one post with "BS" that it does have #1 height..

You have the carriages upside down. The keys clip into the carriages.

I can see H on one side of your spindle in the right side picture.

BS and H carriages have a 5 code key with 5 slots. I notice some of your carriages have 6 slots.

I placed the carriages so the numbering and lettering could be read.

Yes, there is an "H",....but if you look close it's an "LH". There is
also an "RH" stamped in another area.

Yes, there are 6 numbers on the carriages with "BSD" stamped on
them,....what ever that's for..

On the Model E, you must use the the "H" carriage and the "N H" post to cut Ford/Hurd keys from 1936 through 1951. The "H C Z" post and "H" carriage are used with the Ford/Hurd keys from 1932 through early 1935. You need to acquire a code book to complete your package.

Vince,

I figured the "H" was for Hurd. I knew that "BS" was Briggs and Stratton.
You have any idea about the "LH" or the "RH" ?
Thanks for the information,...also, what about the "BSD" withe 6 slots,..GM ?
