Curious truck box I just bought...

I bought an old utility trailer today that someone had long ago made from what the seller had been told was a Model A Ford. My plan is to use the box for my Model A project and then make some kind of new base to use on the trailer. I'm not sure if it is a Model A or Model T box. It measure approximately 43" across and 57" in length. I thought that on the Model T box the front stake pockets were set back about a foot. These are back about 7".

The other weird thing is that there is a strange thing on the front panel. It's hard to describe so I've included pictures. It looks like it could be original but I have never seen anything like this before and can't imagine what it was used for.

Any input on positively id'ing the box or ideas about the weird thing on the front?

Thanks, Jay

Jay, i just bought a 27 roadster pickup body with the bed attached. I just measured mine and it measures about 7 1/2" from the front of the bed to the front of the stake pocket. Hope this helps, Mark.

That is a Model T PU box. The strange thing in the front that you refere to is there for access to the battery box. About the only thing usable for a "A" is the tail gate. The side panels don't have the fender spacers attached and are shapped diff. then a narrow "A" box. I have had two of those "T" boxes. The last one I sold to a guy building an "A" PU rat rod.

Definitely late '26 - '27 box. Early '26 had the stake pockets at the very front (same as Model A) into which stakes could not be inserted due to "lean-back" on the cab body. 1925 is a different box ... same dimensions, same tailgate... the first of Ford's quarter ton steel boxes.

It is 26-27 'T' as Van Dyck says. It is a pitty to take it apart for what you want, seeing it is such great shape. See if you can swap it for a Model 'A' box in the same condition. Try the Swap Meet Ford Barn site. You never know.
