Curious question about AA's

Can a worm drive AA be made to go faster than 35mph? Does someone make 'high speed' rear ends for them or are you stuck with an OD and going 40?

Mike

Your best bet would be the 5.17 high speed rear end and a Warford auxiliary trans.
If you change to a bevel gear rear axle Mitchell makes an OD for that.

Bob.

I saw one at a new england meet that had rear wheels modified for really big tires, which geared it up a lot.
Of course it did not look authentic, but it served the purpose.

yup the high speed (5.17 as stated above) is good for about 35-40mph, low speed is like 20...

yes the highly sought after warford aux trans is your best bet. Has Overdrive, straight thru, and underdrive positions. The Ford "Dual High" is not really that at all. Its just a straight thru or underdrive...

Going to have to get creative going from the 80's truck ****** to the torque tube...probably have to have made a short open driveshaft with modern U joints and custom yoke for the AA driveshaft...

yea Mitchel wouldnt be bad but apparently cant use a worm with it.

How fast are you looking to go? The AA's are heavy so you need all the gearing you can get or make more oomph under the hood.

Warfords show up time to time on ebay or if someone is selling a frame and has one in it... Its a whole Kit that was sold, so you have the OD itself, brackets, special brake cross shaft, shifter handle and im not sure on the U joints.

Can the dual High be reversed in the AA? My dad has a regular pickup that this is done to it. I can't remember if the ends are the same. If it could, that would be a pretty easy swap.
Someday I'll have a AA

Dave Delume, miss victoria on the barn, can make one for the AA.

yes and no... physically yes its been done but im not sure what all was involved. Is it a good idea? To me no. The dual high is a planetary gear setup - they dont like to be run backwards (input output reversed not direction backward) as they get rather hot and they tend to be loud.

TO each their own :P

A coworker keeps trying to get her FIL to sell his 28 that has been sitting outside for years as he is hoarder and she doesn't want to clean up when he is gone. So she keeps threatening to sell it to me-darn. So if it happens (and there is a whole lot of planning that will go into it) I am just trying to see what is out there. I prefer the 31 body style but this one has the wire wheels that I somehow really like. I just want to use it as a truck, you know harware store, dump, etc but still be safe on today's roads.
