cruise-omatic transmission

Same, D1 allows you to start out in first gear. D2 starts out in second gear.
As far as cruising they both upshift to third gear. Drivers choice to start out in first or second gear.

d1 is high gear for freeway driving, d2 wont let trans go into high, used to help hold back the car with a load on steep grades, L or low is for taking off in first gear

I'v owned a few of those cars back when they were new , i go along with "bbrocksr" on how they work. There was more than one "cruise-omatic" style of transmission. The last one i owned and still own was the first 2 years ford made the 65-66 C/4 . I never like they way they worked and had a 67 valve body installed in it to change that shifting pattern .

bill is correct. d1 is first gear start then shifts to second and high gear. d2 is second gear start and shift to high. the only way to hold second is to pull shift lever to low after trans shifts out of low into second .
