hi all; hey i got question??/ putting a different cross member in my 30/31 frame .. new cross mmber is 28/29...now ive got part way put in. the center holes line up, but the front holes do not.. the rear ones do. any difference between the 30/31, and the 28/29 cross member (front)?? would you weld old holes in frame , and drill new ones ... they miss by a lot - 1" to 1 1/2". cant force the crssmmber that much by alighnment awl, or other tools.. what would you do??? thanks for reviewing , and response...kevin mac/toledo

Why are you doing it in the first place?

There were at least 4 different front cross members for 1928-1929.

You are experincing just one of the differences.

Want more?...Go to my website and read the frame article I did for The Restorer and you can learn for yourself.

Also to, I do not know if you are going to put a 28-29 body on that 30-31 frame but you had better make sure you have the RIGHT 30-31 frame or you are going to have to move some brackets to accomodate the 28-29 body if you have the later 1931 frame.

I sure would not weld it...those crossmembers were rivited for a reason...think about it.

Get the right frame for the right job.

Educate yourself...read the article.

KevinMac,
After reading your post i went out and checked my '30-'31 NOS xmember and found the holes do not match my '29 frame. I assumed they were all the same.
Let's check our hole dimensions, may be we can swap.

My '31 part:
Dist btwn two extream holes on ea end = 6 1/8-6 3/8 other end
Tab can be easily bent to match holes in frame

Three hole set = 2 11/16 both ends

two hole set = 2 17/32 ea end

What I need is:
Dist btwn two extreme holes on each end = 6 3/16 +/- 1/8

Three hole set = 3 1/8

Two hole set = 2 3/4

It sounds like you are trying to install a cross member with the fore/aft ribs in the bottom. This would be the '28 type cross member, but with the solid engine mount removed. If that is the case the center holes are NOT the correct holes to align. I assume you are putting the frame under a '29 body.

hi steve; after reviewing your website on the frame info, all i can say is wow ,you got a lot of info here.why was i doingthis? the old crssmmber was rotted beond repair, but the frame rails seem in good shape. this is going to be my roadster p/u frame.. just a bunch of parts that i got at swaps, ect. newer rear diff. open type . going with a 51 flathead v8. and trans..looks like i will weld the old holes shut ,and drill to match the new crssmmber holes. i thought they were all the same. i knew i came to the right place for info like this...thanks a lot, and keep "A" ing... ps. ive got a 31 coupe. all original w rebuilt engine ect.. enjoying it weekly...kevin
