Crank Rachet Bolt removal

My pully is toast with one flange gone and one severely cracked. I'm replacing with a one piece. Radiator and all has already been removed. Engine mount disconnected (I am going to put a new timing gear in while I'm at it).
No battery currently in car and starter has been pulled.
I'm trying to remove the crank ratchet bolt. I'm using a socket and ratchet, but right now I have no way of preventing the engine from turning while trying to loosen it. Any hints ? Or am I better off just putting the starter back in and bracing the breaker bar against the frame and tapping the starter ?
Tried search but only saw the stater, bracing breaker bar method. Just wondering if there is an alternative. Thanks in advance.

Hi Slik,

Had several similar.

Prior to impact wrenches, one vintage trick among vintage mechanics was to hit the end of the wrench handle with light to medium "whacks" with a ball peen hammer to loosen over tightened nuts.

A big heavy hammer or heavy maul will "not" have the shock effects of a smaller hammer.

Some are so tight with embedded rust or whatever, best to break up the remainder of the pulley & then attack the threaded part with a small ball peen hammer & a chisel.

Provide support under the threaded part of the pulley thus exercising care not to beat up the front Babbitt bearing.

And examine it closely - you may find someone has "pinned" the sleeve and nut to prevent them from coming undone. (As I found on one of the basketcases brought home.)

That is why I love this place !!!!
Put it in gear and hit it with the impact wrench....came off no problem (luckily no one pinned it). No more buster knuckles. Can't tell you how much I appreciate it cause I'm sure within time I would have broken something else.
