Well, I was pulling the intake and header off my b motor and spotted what appears to be a cracked block. Don't know if this is common or not.
I am starting to think that I paid to much for this car.
Thanks
Probably been that way a long time and maybe for a lot longer. have it checked if you want. It almost looks like a casting flaw that didn't surface but was in tolerances for the specified usage. A photo from the top would be interesting. If it is not critical you could forget it.
Cracks are common with B model blocks that can be repaired by pinning and should stop it continuing
I would remove the head and check the deck as that is where this crack started and will need pinning also
while the head is off check the rest of the deck and the exhaust ports
I would leave it alone as it is not leaking. The flaw is at the corner where the metal is very thick because of the intersection of the side wall and top deck.
Yup. Cylinders 2 and 3 are prone to cracking between the intake and exhaust valves.
My B-engine'ed Gordon-Smith Compressor I think was chosen to use as a compressor engine BECAUSE of this cracking. If you examine the GS compressor head, the No. 2 and 3 cylinders are the compressor - and the engine valves are not used - and are in fact covered by the GS head thus effectively sealing them (and the cracks) off.
Herm Kohnke or James Rogers would know just what to do. I'd be inclined to go with Bob's suggestion, leave it be. But see what these other two sages of Model A and B engines have to say. I'm curious to find out here too.
