Just a quick update. Block is a 59A
Stopped by the machine shop to see where my projects stood (and to separate me from some folding money
).
No photos. Had the company truck so I couldn't bring the block home.
The crack runs from the middle of the cylinder wall up to the deck, over to and through the valve seat, and it continues on down into the port quite a ways. Intake port if I remember correctly.
They don't believe they can reach far enough down through the valve opening to the end of the crack to be able to stitch the crack. They recommended finding another block before spending the money to attempt to fix this one. It is also cracked in the deck between the stud holes and the water passages in almost every cylinder.
I think these are both somewhat common failures. Any opinions from those experienced in this? I know no one can give a definitive answer without actually seeing the block.
They actually had another customer they just finished a flathead for. He said he had a spare block and to give him a call. He only lives about 15 minutes from me. So I have a line on a block and a complete engine. Hopefully one of them will be OK.
Thanks, all.
