Cracked 59A

I just removed the spark plugs from a 1947 59A that sat in Minn. for the last 40 years. Water came out of the front cyl. and rusty deposits on some other plugs. Must have been water in the pan as dip stick shows rust and water deposits up about 6 inches.
Where do they crack first? Heads? Inside block? I filled rad. with water and don't see any external leaks other than small cracks in hoses. I will ditch it and save a few of the external parts. Just curious where the weakest points are. Thanks John

Frozen coolant forces the pan rails appart right where the pan gasket boss is.. Sometimes in the back of the block & sometimes on the sides. Most valve pocket cracks are from overtemp in the exhaust but not all of them. I've seen a few engines that had water in the cylinders just due to being open to the elements. If it was under a hood and had the old oil bath filter on there, it decreases the chance of it being rain water. Cylinder walls are thick for clean up by boring or sleeving if necessary and some cracks can be pinned pretty easy. It's worth the time to check the thing until you find what the worst of it is.

Block may not be cracked. You will never know for sure unless you tear it down and check it out.

If it sat without an air cleaner and was outside, rain would go down the carb into the manifold and if an intake valve is open, right into that cylinder.

This ^^^^^^

My car set in Minn tree belt for ?? years. Dipstick was corroded, I thought it could be salvaged; but upon pulling it apart, block was cracked just above oil pan gasket. You really couldn't see cracks from outside, as I remember. Good anchor now.
