cowl welting

Question about cowl welting removal and replacement.

I have a 1929 Model A Phaeton that was parked in '87 and left with gas in the tank. 4gallons of really smelly stuff(liquid) and an inch and a half of tar. Have removed tank and had it cleaned and sealed, now to reinstall.

How far apart does one need to take the car apart to remove and reinstall the welting that runs between the cowl and the door posts and over the top rear of the tank? any and all advice would be greatly apprieciated.

Just slide the tank back in. Use low-pressure glue and clothes pins to temporarily hold it in place while the tank is positioned. Then use needle-nose pliers to work it into the correct position.

Ok, but how do you get the old welting out for the last six inches down to the bottom and get it back in? It's really tight down there!
