Cowl Lights

What were the original use of Cowl Lights? I see many catalogs have them listed as turn signals, I didn't think turn signals were even thought of back then.

If they weren't turn signals were they added lights on a different switch, or did they operate off same main light switch?

Sorry again not only new to restoring, but also thread postings.
In the For Sale section I know what TTT and BTT means but what does NOS mean next to parts? Is that NOT ORIGINAL STUFF?

Cowl Lights were used as parking lights. They operate from the same light switch.

NOS = New Old Stock

Parking lights. The less deluxe A's had the small parking bulb in a second socket in the headlight reflector. Back then with no street lights in most places and no reflectors on the car you needed a way to park and be seen for a while without the bigger battery draw of the headlights.
