Cowl Lights

Two cowl light questions have been buzzing around in my head & I'd appreciate any information you can give me.
-1-Model "A" Ford headlights have low & high beams. What was the actual
purpose of the additional cowl light in 1930?
-2-Is there an easy way to tell the difference between an original 1930 cowl
light and a repro.?
Thanks in advance.

1 - Parking lights

2 - I am sure that there is some difference to the trained eye, but I don't have a trained eye.

The cowl lights were required by law to be used and in Europe they still are required.

At night you were required to leave lights on so the car could be seen. Keep in mind street lights were not so common. The parking light could be left on for a very long time with their small current drain.

My 83 and 94 Mercedes have two positions on the headlight switch that allow you to turn on the left or right parking lamps. No doubt needed on some of those small town you find across the pond.

For 1930 and 31s, Cowl Lights were part of the Deluxe Package. Other things included carpet insted of rubber floor mats, upholstry materials, side mounted spares, Wood Graining, Dome Light etc.

If your car was a Standard Model, the Parking lights were a seperate additional small bulb in each Head Light. Deluxe Models did not have the seperate small parking light bulb in the Head Lights, they used the Cowl Lights for Parking Lights.
