Cover Sunvisor 29 TUdor

I am doing a 29 Tudor, it was pretty rusty. Had the visor sand blasted and filled the deep rust pits with body puty only to the point it was smooth. Then primed it with etching primer and painted body color just to seal it from any moisture and continued rust. Now am having second thoughts about gluing the cover over the poly urethane paint. Anyone have experience with gluing the cover over paint or should I sand blast it back to bare metal and glue direct to the metal? Thanks for any input, Ron Kansas

I did it like you did, though I used lacquer. That was in 1980. I have seen no adverse effects.

I rust killed metal & hand enamel painted it. It was then professionally covered with top material; that was in 1970 & still looks great.

:cool:After the paint has cured rough it up with coarse grit sand paper ssay 320 or even a worn piece of 80 grit. This will allow some "tooth" for the glue to help bond.

I attempted to install the covering on my visor more than a year ago. It didn't turn out well at all, so I remover it and the contact cement I used. The problem I ran into was the Weldwood contact cement soaked through the top material in a few spots. Maybe I brushed on too much. Anyway I used PPG DP90 epoxy primer on the visor and a coat or two of K36 sanding primer. I sanded the K36 fairly smooth with about 150 grid sandpaper. I tried to install the covering and when it didn't work out, I used lacquer thinner to remove the contact cement. It was messy job, but the visor looked just fine, K36 intact, after the covering and contact cement was removed. Next time I am going to use 3M spray on adhesive like #77, when I build up enough confidence to try again.
