Couple questions on insurance

My 35 and 56 (Chevy truck) are still licensed in Alaska. 35 has a permanent AK plate. I have purchased 35 and 56 original Michigan plates and intend to license them with permanent "authentic" Michigan registrations. The State wants pictures of the plates, a MI title, an application and proof of insurance before they'll license authentic plates. I now have MI title, application and photos but no MI insurance. Beings that they're still licensed in AK, I don't have MI insurance. I believe Grundy and Haggerty require that the vehicle be located in the state that they're registered in before they'll insure...correct?? Please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that I'll need to get these two vehicles insured in MI with my regular insurer just to get proof of insurance to send to the State with my application. I'll then have to, shortly thereafter, place these vehicles on "storage" insurance (they're not being driven yet) until I get the MI registration...and then go to Grundy or Haggerty for insurance. Sound right??
Second question is that I see that these insurers ask if the vehicles are kept in enclose garages. I guess I'd need to see the definition of a garage. Does a temporary carport count? Does an enclosed trailer with locked doors, locked hitch and blocked in count? Will they insure a vehicle that is kept outside...if so, what does that do to the premium? Thanks for your thoughts!

Call Hagerty. They are easy to work with, and should quickly get you insured. Traverse City, MI 800-922-4050

Grundy will not allow a car to be insured if it is not stored in a permanent type garage. Carports, enclosed trailer, or outside will not get you insurance with them

Since they are now titled in MI, can you obtain regular (current) plates by registering in MI , get your insurance (or vice versa ) and then change over to the year of manufacture plates?

We have to do a similar song and dance in New Jersey in order to get special antique plates if we apply for the special plates by mail.

The fact that they are still licensed (registered?) in Alaska should not make any difference to MI as long as the car is registered in MI. Now I don't know MI rules so maybe this is not an option.

Grundy or Hagerty can answer your question on the garages. I find Hagerty very nice to talk with.

That's what I was worried about. Guess I'm stuck with Allstate.

Try these guys:

American Family has a special policy, and good rates for "seldom driven" vehicles. I get mirror coverage of our policy with our family car on my truck for less than $200 a year. It is based on value. You may need to get a appraisal to verify your desired coverage amount.

This is similar to the deal I get with State Farm........ Mark

I sent a PM to a Barner who is knowledgeable about 35 cabriolets but haven't got a response yet...he must be busy. I'm working on the online quote estimate for Hagerty and they are asking the value of my car. The car is priceless to me based on family history so I don't know what to enter for value. The car is shown on my avatar. Thanks

I just went through some thing like this with Hagerty, they will work it out for you, give them a call. Paul
