Couple of basic questions from beginner

Hi

What function does the key on the side of the fuel pump perform?

I have 2 pipes exiting the inlet manifold, one is connected to the distributor housing and the other goes nowhere, its just been folded over? Would this have powered the vacuum wipers and can I block it off?

That "key" is a drain to move sediment or water out of the filter screen area of pump. The blocked vac line is indeed for wipers. Blocking it off is fine, since it never rains in the UK...or was that California??

On my original '35's, that same tube you are referring to that is bent over on the end, is the vaccum line to the windshield wiper motor.

My unused vacuum port, a male stub, is at the base of my carborator, temporarily blocked-off using a short piece of hose and a threaded bolt. I remove the bolt occasionally and attach my vacuum gauge during tune-ups. ..... Vacuum gauges are relatively inexpensive and can be very helpful in diagnosing engine conditions; you can search forums here about how to understand the implications of their readings.
