What is the recommended (and best) spark plug for a 38-41 Ford flathead? It has Autolite 216 at present. Is the Champion 844 a better replacement?

Thanking you in advance.....................

I use Autolite 216's in all our Flatheads with stock heads and Autolite 437's in the ones with Offy Aluminum heads.

I have ordered a set of Autolite 216 plugs. Thanx for the wonderful information.

Another question: Will new plugs cure a engine miss?

I just researched Autolite 437 on "Sparkplugs.com" and they say that the reach of the plug is only 7/16 inch, the same as 216's ?

Yes, both the 437 and the 216 have the same reach (7/16"), but the 437s have a power tip, which extends the spark gap; the 216s have the standard tip, which has a gap that is flush with the thread.

SparkPlug.com........list the 437 as having a reach of 13/16 and a heat range of 7......the 216......reach 7/16 and a heat range of 6. Contrary to my earlier post...what was I thinking...???

Have been running autolite 216 in my 59ab with Edlebrock aluminum heads. Got me wondering if that it correct for those heads??? Should I be using a longer reach plug?

Can the .030 gap make the engine overheat. Or the "Hot"coil. I've change the radiator, water pumps, electric fan , and 50/50 coolant. And my flathead still overheats. I have the 1940, 24 bolt, with the water inlets in the center, an A is on the head covers.

If you have a clean radiator, new pumps, your car should not overheat. You state that you have an electric fan, which you really should not need, and the car still overheats. This indicates to me that you have an issue with the engine. A simple thing to check is to make sure your timing is set properly. If it is, you might have other issues like a cracked block or blown head gasket, for example. It could be time to pull the heads and inspect. You should not need an electric fan.
