Correct radiator hose color ?

Snyder's list two types of radiator hoses and say both are just like origional. Black with a red stripe and all red radiator hose.

One of the Model A books I have read specifically states that Ford did not use the all red radiator hose.

Don't have a judging standards book yet so what would be correct for a 1930 Standard Roadster.

Thanks

The most similar would be the black hose with the red stripe. It is worth noting that the available repro hoses are not just like originals in that they are generally an incorrect length, and the outside covering does not mimick the original hose.

Hello Brent , i got my set of almost n.o.s. hoses... used less then 100 on a car.. New Owner of the car bought the car restored back in the early 90's and did not like the way the old hose's looked on a fresh restoration for show, so he took them off and put on new ones and the old n.o.s. hoses were on a shelf... . So now they are on my car...FREE.:D can't beat that price:rolleyes::):p

What was the idea behind the red strip?, seems to serve no purpose.

I read somewhere it was a "gum line" to seal or adhere the edge of the fabric reinforcement. I have an era all black hose that is made the same. Although subtle due to color the stripe is still evident.

Lots of correct responses based on some of my research. You can actually get the right length hose that looks wrapped from any O'Rielly's Auto Parts store. Figure out your length, scuff it up with a fine grey Scotchbrite pad, add a red stripe. Or a "brick red" stripe...

Also according to Model A lore, some plants used the red hoses but very few. They were mainly replacement hoses from back in the day, actually way back in the day.

I wonder if the "incorrect length" was so they could also be used on a Model B which requires a slightly longer hose?

I heard a long time ago for someone allot older then i was ,, that the red stripe was used to correctly line up the clamps. As you see in all the pictures the open part with the screw/nut are inline with the red stripe.. How true it is [i don't know] .Just something i heard way back. Mark if you find you need to use the hoses for a National Model "A' meet let me know... it takes a few seconds to take them off. I only plan on using them in June at the A.A.C.A.Grand National meet.
