correct bolt size

I will try again I'm trying to bolt the u joint cups to the back of the trans in my 1940 . I tried using 7/16 USS bolts and they are very tight in the holes and make it very hard to align everything. I'm thinking that the original bolts may have been 3/8, 9/16 wrench size, which would make much easier to line up everything. Does anyone know the correct bolt size or remember the wrench size. Thanks

No idea on the bolt size, but you can just post to your original thread and it will come to the top of the list, you don't have to start a new post.

They are without question, 7/16-20.

The bolts are 7/16 -20 as stated. Now some 7/16 nuts are 11/16" across the flats and some are 5/8" The 5/8" nuts work best for fitting the clamshell. The bolts will also have a 5/8"head.

Mart.

The nuts on the bolts use a smaller than normal hex. The bolts are installed through the transmission side of the mount. The nuts are on the U-joint cap side.

Another great source for fastener info is Roy Nacewicz, www.fordbolts.com. in the older catalog I have page 18 in the "universal cap to transmission fasteners" section is kit R-86-18 for 1939-42 which covers your application.

Ford was famous for using fasteners with odd threads. We never discard old Ford bolts, as they come in very handy many times.

Roger on that! I have many 5 gallon buckets filled with old Ford hardware. Most of it came from an old time Ford mechanics garage after he passed away. They were cleaning out all his many years of all kinds of things and I just happened to stop there at the right time.

Even if they aren't "weird", they are a high quality bolt with extra-heavy heads in most cases. I don't toss any.
